I Denied My Ex One Last Chance After They Cheated Twice, and Now They’re Telling Everyone I Never Loved Them

My ex and I had been together for almost four years, and for most of that time I believed we would eventually get married. When I discovered the first affair, I was devastated, but my ex showed deep remorse, apologized repeatedly, and promised to rebuild the trust they had broken. Despite warnings from friends and family, I chose to give the relationship another chance because I still loved them and believed people could learn from serious mistakes. Although rebuilding trust was difficult, I worked hard to move forward and hoped we could create a stronger future together. Unfortunately, that hope disappeared when I discovered a second affair. This betrayal hurt even more because it proved the first incident had not been an isolated mistake but part of a repeated pattern. I realized I could no longer continue a relationship built on broken trust, so I ended it peacefully, returned our belongings, blocked all contact, and focused on rebuilding my own life. After several months, I finally found peace in my new apartment and believed that chapter of my life had come to an end. One afternoon, my ex unexpectedly appeared at my apartment asking for another chance. They insisted they had changed and begged me to fight for our relationship once more. I listened quietly before giving a simple answer No. When they asked why I wasn't willing to fight for us, I calmly replied, I already did. That conversation ended there, but afterward mutual friends began telling me I had become cold and that true love required forgiveness. Many of them didn't realize I had already forgiven one affair before the second betrayal occurred. As rumors spread, I reread the journal I had kept after the first affair and found an entry that reminded me why I had made my decision. One sentence stood out Love can survive a mistake. Trust rarely survives repeated choices. Later, I discovered my ex had been telling people only about the second breakup while leaving out the fact that I had already given them another chance after the first affair. Once friends learned the complete story, many understood that I had not walked away at the first sign of trouble but only after every effort to rebuild the relationship had failed. Months later, my ex sent a sincere apology acknowledging both the affairs and the false impression they had given others about our relationship. I accepted the apology but understood that forgiveness did not mean reconciliation. Looking back, I do not regret giving a second chance after the first betrayal because I wanted to believe healing was possible. However, I also learned that love should never come at the expense of self-respect. Choosing to walk away after repeated betrayals was not giving up on love—it was choosing a healthier future for myself.
